Getting Ready for the Fesitval of Fear in Toronto
Ghoul Friday — July 13, 2009 - 8:01pm
Everything is arranged. The table is booked for the end of August. The contract is signed. The book is being printed. So what's to worry about?
It's my first time showing at a convention. Sure, I've attended conventions before, but this time I'll be on the other side of the table.
And while I've shared my art and writing with strangers online, with trick or treaters who came by on Halloween, and with friends, I've never put these items on public display in...well...public. Especially not this sort of live and in person public. Remember, I'll be rubbing shoulders with other artists and authors, not to mention some of the biggest names in the horror industry.
Don't get me wrong. It's all very exciting. But it also makes my stomach do a bit of a somersault.
What happens if I get there, and everyone takes a vote, and I have to wear a t-shirt with the word "HACK" in bright red letters?
What if the books don't arrive in time, and no one enjoys my little creepy creations (like the Underbiters or the the Montauks)?
What if the books arrive and I spill my coffee (or brains) all over the first editions? And then they burst into flames?
Ok, I realize it's unlikely the folks attending the convention will gather together with pitchforks and torches to express their displeasure. I also know there will be people who appreciate my work (the percentage of attendees gives me good odds).
Can't blame a ghoul for having the jitters. All jokes aside, I am genuinely excited to be part of this convention, surrounded by like minded creepsters. I couldn't choose a more welcoming crowd.
